You booze, you lose
Whether you're trying to lose weight or generally live a healthy life, a frequent drinking habit doesn't usually fit into the picture sadly.
luckily, the doesn't mean you've got to give it up for good. We actually believe that 'indulging' is a necessary part of life (and your sanity) - Flexible dieting is what we are all about after all so it would be pretty contradictory for us to put our clients on a constant booze ban! Plus, we love a good party too ;)
Making the right choices.
The best form of alcohol, from a calorie perspective, are the classic spirits. We're talking about tequila, rum, vodka, whiskey and gin. One ounce/ 30ml of any of these contains around 64 calories, most of which come directly from the alcohol content. However, the problem with spirits is that people tend to mix them with sugary fillers that ramp up the cals significantly. Once you add juice, soda, coke, lemonade and syrups to create those delicious, fancy cocktails, you could quickly overtake the calorie content of wine and beer!
Now I'm not suggesting you guys go raw and and hop onto the vodka and rum shots (grim) but there are definitely ways to enjoy a cocktail (or two) with a little less guilt. So here are some healthier choices and classic twists that may ease the guilt and sit a little lighter on your waistline:
Who doesn't love a Mojito? It's the perfect summer accessory. Annoyingly, this is also one of the highest cal cocktails out there, most likely due to the fact it has heaps of actual brown sugar in it. 2 or 3 of these and you are looking at around 750 cals!
However, don't be put off just yet! Most bars will be happy to make the following changes for you, you just gotta ask!
- Swap the lemonade for soda water
- Swap the sugar for a natural 0 cal sweetener
You probably won't notice the difference!
Something a little different to try at home - perfect for the summer vibes, easy to make and looks super impressive!
- 2 oz. strawberry vodka,
- 2 oz. light lemonade
- splash of fresh lemon juice (to taste)
- strawberries for garnish (optional)
Combine the vodka, light lemonade, and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a fresh strawberry.
*Optional: For a more intense strawberry flavor, a splash of stained strawberry puree may be added.
CALS = 130
VODKA, LIME & SODA.
A classic 'healthy' drink but for a good reason. At just under 100 cals per glass, it is almost the equivalent to 1 cocktail!
Ok so you've tried everything else but you just love wine. Wine is your thing. We get ya. A bit of wine is actually not too bad for you. Red wine in particular packs a surprising amount of nutritional value with each glass containing around 4% iron, 9% potassium and 5% magnesium. It is also filled with antioxidants called Flavanoids which have shown to reduce blood clots and lower cholesterol. Calories tend to range from about 110 to 130 for a five ounce glass, which ain't bad at all.
However, 1 glass quickly turns into two, maybe three and then there are the unavoidable top ups which ruin your head count and suddenly you are chatting away, loving life, insisting on buying everyone a round a jager bombs and queueing up for cheesy chips. Basically, it can quickly escalate. In my experience, wine is among the most dangerous drinks of all time.
So my advise here would be to enjoy a glass of red with your meal. Red wine is definitely not a binge drink, unless you're going for the purple-stained lips and teeth look and a hangover from hell!
If you are a white or rose fan, try adding ice to each glass - you'll be surprised how far once glass can go so not only are you saving pennies but you are savings calories and headaches!
